Alternatives, For Earth's Sake

Some of us are old enough to have seen the 1967 blockbuster movie "The Graduate" starring Dustin Hoffman in the title role. At one point the brand-spanking new college graduate received this advice from a seasoned and successful man: 'There's a great future in plastics. Think about it. Will you think about it?' Well, apparently lots of folks thought about it because our natural world is awash in plastics, smothered by plastics, and undone by plastics.

Seriously, we must resist the lure of plastics and creatively utilize Earth-friendly alternatives...every day, all day long. Fortunately, alternatives are readily available. We just have to relinquish old habits (hard) and try new products (fun). For example, here are several alternatives to old-fashioned plastic trash bags and sandwich bags:

30 gallon Lawn and Leaf Bags - collect grass clippings, leaves, etc., or place in your outside trash barrel for collecting household trash. Large plastic bags are not needed. Compostable lawn bags are available at Costco, recyclable lawn bags are available at Ace Hardware.

Simple Truth 13 Gallon Compostable Kitchen Trash Bags are available at Kroger.

Ziplock Paper Sandwich and Snack Bags are recyclable and resealable. These are available at Walmart, Office Depot, and Amazon.

So...be flexible and creative...for Earth's sake. Your grandchildren, and future generations, will thank you!
