Conversation with Dr. Lucia Hulsether

  • Church of the Savior UCC 934 North Weisgarber Road Knoxville, TN, 37909 United States (map)

This Sunday, January 7, we have an opportunity to have a discussion with author, scholar, and teacher, Lucia Hulsether, who grew up in the COS community, about her book Capitalist Humanitarianism.

Here is a link to a review of the book in The Christian Century.

"Is it possible to act ethically within capitalism? What would this even mean? In Capitalist Humanitarianism, Lucia Hulsether uses personal narrative, ethnographic research, and social history to explore how different people have answered the question —from the origins of fair trade among Christian missionaries in occupied Palestine and Puerto Rico, to microfinance banks and social entrepreneurship programs that target women of color in the global south, to the expansion of private philanthropy as a supplement to the shrinking social safety net, to worker justice and unionization struggles."

On Sunday, Lucia will highlight the ways that the book is shaped by the traditions of theological reflection and justice activism that she learned as a young person growing up at Church of the Savior.

Lucia is the daughter of Mark Hulsether and Anne Mckee. She received a BA from Agnes Scott College in Religious Studies and Sociology/Anthropology, an MDiv from Harvard Divinity School, and a PhD and MA from Yale University in Religious Studies.
